Our attempt at making music for our 2 minute opening and why we didn't use it

At first, we decided to create the music for our 2 minute film. I started to create a piece of music on GarageBand for the title sequence just to test it out.
I completed the thirty second piece of music. but then we decided as a group that the music didn't quite fit with our title sequence - it needed to be more haunting or simple. This then resulted in us looking on several websites to find appropriate copyright-free music that would suit the title sequence better.
We also decided that it would probably be best to find a copy-right free piece of music for our film too, as we felt that we wouldn't be able to create the right atmosphere with the the sounds available in GarageBand. We wanted to create an ominous feel in the film with the music, and we couldn't create this with GarageBand.

Side Effects (2013): A film with similar elements to ours

Side Effects Mara Tatum Couch - H 2013"Emily Taylor, despite being reunited with her husband from prison, becomes severely depressed with emotional episodes and suicide attempts. Her psychiatrist, Jonathan Banks, after conferring with her previous doctor, eventually prescribes an experimental new medication called Ablixa. The plot thickens when the side effects of the drug lead to Emily killing her husband in a "sleepwalking" state. With Emily plea-bargained into mental hospital confinement and Dr. Banks' practice crumbling around him, the case seems closed. However, Dr. Banks cannot accept full responsibility and investigates to clear his name. What follows is a dark quest that threatens to tear what's left of his life apart even as he discovers the diabolical truth of this tragedy." - IMDB - Kenneth Chisholm

Although the plot is significantly different to ours, it has one similar element - the use of drugs (prescribed in the case of this film, whereas ours are illegal drugs) effects one of the main protagonists and causes a distortion of reality. Also, if we made our full film instead of the first two minutes, another similar element would be that the main character wants to find out the truth of what has actually happened - this is a recurring element of some psychological thrillers, which shows that we are on the right track for our film.

Music and effects

As the editing process has nearly been completed we have started work on our title sequence. I have been searching for a piece of music that is royalty free and is not copyrighted, i used the website jamendo.com and did a search for - dark, mysterious, suspenseful music. I then selected a few i liked and thought would fit the film. Then as a group we all listened to the music and decided on a piece to use. It was then downloaded.

Maddy is continuing with editing, she is using effects such as double vision and blurred vision using methods on final cut, and a cylinder effect has been added is distaught.  She is changing some sound on some of the clips and is planning on making it brighter

Autumn is working on the title sequence, she has found a smoke effect that is going to be used in the film and adding credits to it. She has been researching how to decrease the speed, she is also merging shots together whilst adding text - names, production company and directors etc.

Beth G is working on the blog and adding additional information and research.

Music Ideas

Initially we wanted to use someone's cover of a popular song for our film music, however due to lack of response by these people we have decided to create our own music.
We will be using GarageBand to create the music - there will be different sequences of music because of several changes in atmosphere in the two minutes.
We will also try and find copyright free music to use as we can't create the right atmosphere for some scenes with GarageBand.
Because our film is a psychological thriller, we need music that will create an eerie or haunting atmosphere - we also need pieces if music that will build tension and cause the pace of the film to quicken. So, maybe music that contains vocals (preferably, a woman's vocals as they generally tend to create a more ominous feel to the music) that simply just consists of "ah's" (obviously more melodic and drawn out than the written version). Or, the use of string instruments in the music could also create a similar atmosphere.

Changes to script

Changes after first filming

After filming we found that there was few things that we would like to change in our film.  We have gone through the script and added, taken away and reworded lines to improve, we will also re-film certain shots as we found they weren't quite right and needed changing whilst we were in editing. Pulled one actor out from the second filming due to a clash of schedules but their parts can be edited in.

Storyboard

Our Finished Storyboard

Our storyboard isn't exactly like our film, however this is because of complications when filming. This storyboard includes four characters, while our two minute film now only has three.
The script is also different because of the complications.
Nevertheless, this is the idea we wanted from the start of this project; if we had not encountered any problems, this would have been something very similar to the final version of the film we have now.
