Research Into Similar Films

Research into Similar films

Although there are many films that resemble the film my group are going to create, the TV programme Skins is the most similar. Yet in terms of films, Christian F is a Teen drug related film that was created in 1981. Although this film has a more old fashioned outlook on drugs and teenagers, its morals are the exact same as what our film's morals are.

Although this is a German film, all the scenes could help to film our own film, giving us advice in what scenes we should shoot and how we should shoot them without seeming unrealistic.

This movie portrays the drug scene in Berlin in the 1970s, following tape recordings of Christiane F. 14-year-old Christiane lives with her mother and little sister in a typical multi-story apartment building in Berlin. She's fascinated by 'The Sound', a new disco with the most modern equipment. Although legally she's too young, she asks a friend to take her. There, she meets Detlef, who's in a clique where everybody's on drugs. Step by step she gets drawn deeper into the scene.

The basic summary for this film, helps us to understand how friends can influence their friends to take drugs, even in britain and in this modern era.

Many reviews of this film quote "I've seen many films portraying drug addiction but none with such terrifying authenitcity as this film." and "I have seen so many films about drug addiction, and not one of them can equal the sheer power of this one". Meaning that this film is realistic, and shows how teenagers can get themselves in this pradicament. Watching this film could show us how to make our film also realistic and not same like a joke or too much of just a teenage drama.

Other reviews say that Christiane F is a "very dark film that portrays childhood drug abuse". We have planned for our film to also be a dark Psychological Thriller, where certain themes are used to inform the public of the affect of drugs on teenagers and how it can affect teenagers in the future.

Although the drug that is used in this film is Heroine, a higher class of drug, I believe this helps to promote how drugs such as marijuana can increase to more serious drugs that can permenately harm your body.

Another drug film that promotes what drug use can do is Trainspotting which was created in 1996. This film is set in scotland, which is closer to home than Germany. As this is set in England, it  shows what our younger generation is open to.

"Renton, deeply immersed in the Edinburgh drug scene, tries to clean up and get out, despite the allure of the drugs and influence of friends"

This film also has the theme of friendship and how friends can influence their friends when childish and immature. There is also a major theme of relationships, which relates to Beth and her cousin relationship and how Beth tries to protect her.

Most of Trainspottings reviews are positive, yet some of the negative reviews say that this film is just rude, with lots of swearing and irrelevent language. As our film will be rated 15, we cannot have too much swearing or harmful language. In comparison, many quote "The film is a black comedy, at times hilarious, tragic, surreal, brutal and uplifting", although this doesn't fit in with what we wanted our film to be like, there are many aspects we can consider. The drug taking scenes help us and can be used within our own, to show that although the drug being used isn't one of the most extreme drugs that can be used, it can still cause harm. This could be shown through certain editing that is also used in Trainspotting.

There are many films that we can relate to when deciding whats best for our own film. However, these two films stood out to me as being important. They are both popular classics that (According to the reviews) are loved and were really inspirational to viewers.
